Hello & Welcome to FixYa If the smell comes from the rear panel then it can be due to a bad thermal fuse/thermostat which is located on the blower wheen housing to the exhaust duct, this fuse cannot be reset if it tests open then it needs replacement. Another thing that can cause burning smell is the motor going bad, it is located at the bottom of the unit, after reading your question most likely it is the motor that is bad and needs replacement.
